History and range of services
Energietechnik Essen GmbH is a company whose abilities and capabilities to develop, manufacture and supply advanced high-tech products, mainly for the power-generating industry, are based on both continuous research and development work and experience dating back to the year 1811.
When the first turbo generators were built at the beginning of the 20th century, our predecessors supplied those components that are exposed to the highest loadings within these power generators, i.e. retaining rings of high-tensile, non-magnetic special steel.
Such rings are required at the shaft ends of turbo generators to keep the copper wires extending from the rotor grooves in position, even at maximum rotational speeds. Our company’s earliest records of non-magnetic retaining ring materials date back to 1901.
Today we develop, manufacture and supply forgings of nitrogen-alloyed, and if required, pressure-nitrided, non-magnetic, austenitic and ferritic-martensitic special steels that meet the requirements of the 21st century.
For manufacturing and refining our steels for high-performance applications, our facility at Essen is equipped with an electroslag remelting facility and an electroslag pressure remelting facility.
With these facilities we produce in monitored and controlled processes remelted ingots of approx. 1,000 to 25,000 kg in weight and ingot diameters of around 400 to 1,000 mm as input materials for our own products or supplied within our scope of services.
Whenever we choose suitable suppliers and service providers to support our work, we control and supervise the relevant processes in compliance with our specifications and instructions. In particular, this applies to contracted forging processes.
Our plant avails of a central facility for the cold expanding of retaining rings of non-magnetic, austenitic steel, comprising a hydraulic expanding press with a maximum pressing force of 60 MN. Moreover, we have suitable heat treatment furnaces, quenching facilities and machines for cold processing, specially designed for the manufacture and machining of retaining rings.
To perform in-process quality tests and tests in the condition as delivered as well as carry out research and development projects, we have suitable, partially automatic testing equipment and facilities at our disposal, enabling us to perform both all required non-destructive as well as mechanical-technological materials tests and metallographic examinations.
